Social Care News: Scotland - Police interviews may be evidence

Child abuse victims could have their police interviews videoed and used as evidence in Scotland's courts.

An evaluation into a pilot run by police in Tayside and Dundeerecommended that the Scottish Executive should take responsibility forthe scheme and provide money to introduce it nationwide. The pilotsbegan in 2003 and the executive funded the evaluation.

The report showed videos provided a complete record of an interview, meant interviewers did not have to make notes, and could reduce thenumber of times young people are interviewed. However, the report saidbetter equipment was needed.

An executive spokesman said: "This research shows that visual recordingof interviews could be a useful tool in our work to support childwitnesses so that they give their best evidence in the interests ofjustice for all."
