Social Care News: Scotland - Child information sharing to be law

First Minister Jack McConnell has pledged to introduce legislation to force professionals working with children to share information.

Speaking at the recent Scottish Labour Party conference, McConnell saidmany children in Scotland suffered because of a "chaotic environmentcaused by drug or alcohol abuse".

"The one thing that has characterised too many past failures is thefailure to communicate between professionals - it is still happeningtoday. It infuriates me. And ordinary members of the public don'tunderstand why it happens," he said. "When we update child protectionlaws later this year, we will make it a duty for professionals to sharethe information necessary to protect our children."

Professionals who did not fulfil this duty could be "struck off," headded. He also said social workers and "other front-line professionals"would be re-trained in child protection.
