Under new Government legislation, all social workers will need to be registered by 1 April 2005. Independent officers who review the cases of looked-after children are currently in the process of registering with the GSCC (Social Care News, 14-20 July).
Now, staff working in children's homes and residential family centres have been classified as the next registration priority by the GSCC after social care managers. Staff working in adoption and fostering agencies are also a high priority.
A GSCC spokeswoman said priority was based on the vulnerability of groups worked with. Consultation will close in November, and new legislation may be in place by the end of the year.
