1 min read
New standards for private fostering need to be widely publicised tosocial workers and the public in order to be effective, fosteringprofessionals have warned.

The National Minimum Standards for Private Fostering were released bythe Department for Education and Skills last week. They clarify localcouncils' duties on private fostering and will provide benchmarks forinspection.

Under the standards, councils must have a plan setting out their privatefostering duties and how they will carry them out, assess thesuitability of private fostering arrangements and report annually to thelocal safeguarding children board on the welfare of privately fosteredchildren.

Vicki Swain, policy and communications manager at the Fostering Network'said that previous rules had not been effective because they were notgenerally known about.

"There's a need for publicising them to the public within schools, doctors' surgeries and within social services," she said.
