Social Care News: Placement moves ADSS plays down bin bag plan delay

The Association of Directors of Social Services has played down fears that local authorities are being slow to implement policies banning the practice of being "binbagged".

A National Voice, the charity behind the This is Not a Suitcase campaign, revealed that only eight out of 150 directors of social services have so far signed its charter calling for a ban on using bin bags to transport the possessions of looked-after children moving placements.

It follows the announcement last month by social care leaders that they were implementing policies to stop the practice (Children Now, 16-22 February).

But John Coughlan, chair of the association's children and families committee, insisted the campaign had its backing. "It's a communication issue, these things take time to filter through," he said.
