Social Care News: Looked-after children - Scots councils told toelect champions

Scotland's local authorities should nominate elected members to act as champions for looked-after children, says a report by the Social Work Inspection Agency.

Extraordinary Lives found that developing "corporate parenting skills"was the best way to make sure local authorities provide the bestpossible care.

The report says that many looked-after children face disadvantage anddiscrimination and that expectations of what they can achieve are toolow, but that with the right support they can succeed at school and inwork.

Ruth Stark, spokeswoman for the British Association of Social WorkersScotland, said: "This is a timely report that reminds councillors oftheir duty towards children in local authority care."

A spokesman for the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities said: "Wewelcome the report and will consider all the recommendations containedin it."
