Social Care News: Looked-after children - Model for parental contact to be tested

Looked-after children in Southwark are set to benefit from a pilot scheme to improve contact arrangements with birth parents.

Southwark council has teamed up with the University of East Anglia to test a model to improve decision-making around contact for looked-after children in adoption and permanent foster care.

Bryan Edmands, team manager of Southwark council's looked-after children team, said the model would be particularly helpful in contested care proceedings.

It would help staff be clear on the thinking behind contact proposals and provide a better evidence base, he added.

Elsbeth Neil, lead researcher at the University of East Anglia, said that the model pulled together messages from research to help practitioners make the right decision for a child. It would help test theories against the realities of contemporary practice, she added.
