Social Care News: Looked-after children - London plan to cut distant placements

London councils say they are working to increase their pool of local foster carers after the Kent Child Protection Committee accused them of dumping vulnerable children far away from home.

Its report shows more than half the looked-after children in Kent are from outside the county. And one in four of all children in care are in Thanet, one of Kent's most deprived areas.

Hounslow and Islington councils are highlighted as placing the highest number of looked-after children in Thanet.

"We are in the process of a major campaign to increase the number of local foster carers. This will reduce the number of children placed out-of-borough," said councillor James Kempton from Islington council. A spokesman for Hounslow council said there was an "excellent" response to its recruitment drive during Fostering Fortnight.
