Social Care News: Looked-after children - 10,000 children in distant placements

More than 10,000 looked-after children are still living further than 20 miles from their homes, according to Government figures.

They show that in the year ending 31 March 2006 10,300 looked-afterchildren were living more than 20 miles from their homes, with 8,100living outside of their home council.

Vicki Swain, policy manager at the Fostering Network, said: "We stillhave 16 per cent of children more than 20 miles away. While theFostering Network does believe that some children benefit from beingaway from their families, some children need to maintain contact."

She added that the situation can affect children's schooling becausethey have to travel a long way or change schools.

David Holmes, chief executive of the British Association for Adoption &Fostering, agreed it was too many, but recognised that some children maybe living outside their home area for "very good reasons".
