SOCIAL CARE NEWS: Learning Disability - Carer families face financial hardship

1 min read
More than half of families with a child who has learning disabilities live in or close to poverty, according to a new report.

The proportion is higher among minority ethnic communities, according to the research from the Learning Disability Task Force.

The group has called on the Government to do more to ensure young people with learning difficulties access the services they need.

"Most children and adults with learning disabilities live with their families," the report said. "Family carers are still telling us that they do not get the services or support they need.

"The task force wants to make sure that children and young people with learning disabilities have the right support to get the best out of life."

The report also stated that not enough was being done to move children living in long-stay hospitals back into their respective communities. It called on all long-stay hospitals to be closed by the end of the year.
