Social Care News: Immigration - Marshall continues Dungavel campaign

Scotland's children's commissioner is waiting to receive full responses to issues she raised with Home Office minister Des Browne at a meeting, before she decides how to continue her campaign to end the detention of children at Dungavel.

Commissioner Kathleen Marshall met Browne, the minister responsible for immigration, last week, and said there was an "open and constructive discussion".

However, she said it was too early to say if progress had been made.

The Home Office says it will still house children at the Dungavel detention centre when it is necessary.

A Home Office spokesman said: "We share the commissioner's concern that the needs of families must be safeguarded and we must do everything to minimise detention.

"But, unfortunately, the detention of failed asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants is necessary and we believe that in these small number of cases, children should be kept with their families."
