Social Care News: Governance - DfES investigates extended models

Schools should rework how they are governed to help manage extended services better, according to draft advice.

A Department for Education and Skills' discussion paper on themanagement of extended schools and children's centres suggests severalmodels of overseeing extended services.

These include adding providers or users of extended school services tothe school's governing body or setting up dedicated extended servicescommittees that are answerable to school governors.

Schools that co-operate in order to provide extended services shouldhave a joint committee to share accountability between the individualschools, says the paper, which was published last week.

Comments on the paper, The Governance and Management of Extended Schoolsand Sure Start Children's Centres, are due by 22 December.
