SOCIAL CARE NEWS: Funding - City council denies requesting money

Edinburgh City Council has insisted the main purpose of a meeting with the Scottish Executive last week was not to ask for help with funding a restructure of its social services department.

The council is carrying out a review of the department (News, 14 January) following a critical report into the death of baby Caleb Ness, who was killed in 2001 by his brain-damaged father.

The council said its delegation met Government officials to update them on its progress. A spokeswoman said no "specific request" for funding was made but she admitted that money was "probably mentioned".

One option the council is considering is the creation of a department of education and children's services.
