Social Care News: Fostering - Councils must plan for the long term

1 min read
Councils must take a long-term approach to tackling the shortage of 10,000 foster carers in the UK, social services directors have said.

Paul Fallon, director of social services at the London Borough of Barnet, told Children Now directors were committed to national, long-term, strategic solutions.

His comments come a week after independent fostering agencies said Kent council's drive to discourage private placements was working to the detriment of looked-after children (Children Now, 25-31 May).

Fallon said it had taken Barnet council three years to turn its fostering services around. Vacancy rates for care staff have dropped from 30 per cent to three per cent in this period and the council's stock of foster carers has increased by 50 per cent.

Meanwhile, London's councils are planning a combined approach to tackling the shortage of foster carers in the capital.
