The scheme, FosterTalk Independent Support Services, was launched lastmonth by FosterTalk, a private firm specialising in advice services forfoster carers.
The service provides an adviser who visits the family and supports thefoster carer, children still in placement with them and other familymembers.
They can act as a mediator on behalf of the carer, brief their solicitorand work with other professionals on the case.
The advisers are usually qualified in social work and some areexperienced foster carers. The service is available in England andWales. The service currently has 20 advisers and is training a further25.
The scheme costs 45 per hour to local authorities and fosteringagencies that are members of FosterTalk, or 50 to non-members.Organisations buying into the scheme can specify a maximum number ofhours if they wish.
