Social Care News: Foster care - Agencies join to develop degree

A new degree for foster carers will start in Kent this September. Independent fostering agencies in the county have worked with Greenfinch, a charity with expertise in training, to develop the foundation degree. Canterbury Christ Church University has accredited the course.

David Jennings, service manager at Greenfinch, said: "We anticipate that20 to 40 foster carers will start the course in September."

Peter Stevens, manager of the independent agency Kasper Fostering, saidit was brilliant news. "It is the first time foster carers have had theopportunity to pursue academic training on a par with social workers'training," he said. "We hope it will raise the status of foster carers."
