The Adoption and Children Act 2002 put a duty on councils to providesupport services to adoptive families beyond the early days of aplacement.
But the Commission for Social Care Inspection's adoption manager KarenDolton said that while all councils have some form of service in place,the quality varies markedly.
"In some cases there is a dedicated team to offer post-adoption support,but in some cases this is just one post that may still be vacant," shesays.
Dolton, who was speaking following the release of a commission reportinto the performance of adoption services, estimates that a "minority,perhaps less than half of agencies" are offering a post-adoption supportservice beyond the minimum standard.
