Social Care News: Abuse Convictions - Deluge of requests for appeals panel

The quashing of a care worker's conviction for child abuse has prompted a "deluge" of requests to the Historical Abuse Appeal Panel to review cases.

The panel has now been made aware of 250 cases, said solicitor Mark Newby, one of its founders.

Anver Daud Sheikh had his conviction overturned last month (News, 11-17 February), but was told he must face a retrial last week. However, Newby said "the material we put to the jury will show the allegations are false".

The panel is also continuing talks with the Criminal Cases Review Commission about a wider review of similar cases.
