Social Care: GCSE tutoring for children in care

Looked-after children at an independent fostering agency are being given the chance to get one-to-one tutoring to help them through their GCSEs.

Foster Care Associates (FCA) has joined forces with tutoring agency Fleet Tutors to help its children improve their outcomes in end of year examinations.

Starting this month, the pupils will get the opportunity to have 12 weeks of home tutoring on a subject of their choice.

FCA director of education Tim Whittingham said: "Because so manylooked-after children have had such a poor educational experience both prior to coming into care and, for many, while they are in care, what we are trying to do is boost their life chances by getting them more engaged in their education."

The organisation consulted with young people on whether they would like home tuition and received a positive response.
