Social Care: Family courts - Lawyers say fees still not enough

A new fee structure for lawyers involved in family cases is not enough, according to the Association of Lawyers for Children.

In its response to the Legal Services Commission consultation Legal AidReform: Family and Family Mediation Fee Schemes, the association said itcould not assess whether family lawyers would be able to operate on theproposed fees.

Caroline Little, joint chair of the association, said: "The thing that'sbecoming very clear is that there is no more money. Unless we can getmore funds in we are never going to be properly remunerated."

She said the association was concerned that the lack of extra money willmean more lawyers will leave the family care sector.

The association's response said: "The loss to the already fragilesolicitor base has started and sufficient care to prevent further losshas not been taken."
