Of the 55,700 core assessments undertaken in the year 2002/03, 31,000 (56 per cent) were completed within 35 days, compared with 52 per cent last year.
There were 26,000 children on child protection registers in March 2003 - 24 per 10,000 of the population under 18. The figure is just over three per cent higher than a year ago but 18 per cent lower than in 1993.
Additions to the register have leapt by eight per cent since the previous year, while the number being taken off the register has risen slightly.
The Referrals, Assessments, and Children and Young People on Child Protection Registers for the year to 31 March 2003 show there are more boys on the register than girls - a reversal of the position a decade ago.
