Guidance setting out the responsibilities of local authorities in relation to looked-after children and the Child Trust Fund have been published by HM Revenue and Customs.

According to the guidelines the role of the local authority is to helpidentify looked-after children who do not have a child trust fundaccount, which is a long-term savings and investment account forchildren.

Local authorities must also identify children who have no one withsuitable parental responsibility to look after their account.Information on these children is sent to the child trust fund office, who will then open an account for the child.
