Charities call for trust funds for children in care

The needs of vulnerable children have been overlooked as the government moves to abolish child trust funds and the health in pregnancy grant, charity chiefs have warned.

Following the second reading of the Savings Accounts and Health in Pregnancy Bill in the House of Lords, the chief executives of charities Action for Children and Barnardo’s have voiced disappointment that there will be no future government savings accounts set up for children in care.

The bill, if passed, will end child trust funds for children born from January 2011 and will abolish the health in pregnancy grant from January 2011.

In a joint statement Dame Clare Tickell and Martin Narey said: "We are bitterly disappointed at the lack of any firm commitment to provide savings accounts for looked-after children. The needs of this vulnerable group have clearly been overlooked, denying them a small element of financial security enjoyed by many who are not in care. This is a ‘nest-egg’ that provides a crucial asset base to help young people plan for a future after leaving care.
