Slimmed-down EYFS proposals win support across the sector

Dame Clare Tickell's call for evidence for her review into the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) attracted an overwhelming response, with more than 3,300 organisations, practitioners and parents eager to have their say.

The strength of feeling in support of the framework for under-fives was clear and, as such, Tickell's review argues that the curriculum should be maintained and remains applicable to all early years settings, albeit with scope for exemptions.

However, while the principle of a universal early years framework was strongly endorsed, the review also proposes to slim down the number of early learning goals - measures of children's development - from 69 to 17 to allow practitioners more contact with children and give parents better understanding of their child's development.

Claire Schofield, policy director at the National Day Nurseries Association, said: "Our members didn't want to see radical change because practitioners recognise how positive EYFS has been. But the big themes coming through were about bureaucracy. Reducing the early learning goals will really help with that clarity."
