Skills for the Job: Producing healthy nursery meals

The early years is a crucial time in a child's development to establish healthy eating habits that are essential to living a long life.

Why is it important for early years settings to produce healthy meals?

Good nutrition and the ability to make good lifestyle choices are fundamental to living a long life and preventing diet-related ill health. Children between the ages of one and five grow and develop rapidly, meaning eating habits and food intake can affect their growth and development at a time when they are totally dependent on others for their nutrition. The early years are therefore the best possible time to encourage children with healthy eating habits as they develop preferences and behaviours towards food.

Early years practitioners are likely to provide children with at least one of their daily meals, so a commitment to promoting healthy eating provides an assurance to parents and carers that their child's nutritional wellbeing is being taken care of.
