The Conservative-controlled London borough banned Sexwise posters that aim to raise awareness about pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, deeming them "unsuitable for a formal or youth setting".
Councillor Stephen Knight, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition, condemned the council's decision. "By denying access to important information, it is putting young people's health at risk," said Knight. "These are entirely suitable posters expressed in a lively colourful way to attract young people's attention.
"I'm not aware of anywhere else in the country doing this."
Knight said he had received emails of support from Angela Edwards, the local implementation manager at the Teenage Pregnancy Unit, and from staff at the local primary care trust, who are duty bound to follow the council's decision.
