Sex offender pilot areas are named

Social Care
The government has named four areas that will pilot the release of information on sex offenders to certain members of the public.

Announced as part of the Violent Crime Action Plan, the pilots involve more work on the measures outlined in the Review of the Protection of Children from Sex Offenders last June.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith this week named the four areas as Cleveland, Cambridgeshire, Hampshire and Warwickshire. The pilots will allow parents or legal guardians to register an interest in a person and apply for information about any child sex offences they may have.

The action plan also promises ongoing work to improve the protection of children online, with guidance to be published by the end of 2008.

Smith said: "Every child sexually abused and every case of someone suffering domestic violence is one too many."
