Sex offender disclosure scheme to be extended

1 min read Social Care
A pilot scheme aimed at protecting children by giving parents information about sex offenders is to be extended.

The Child Sex Offender Disclosure Pilot has been tested across parts of the police force in Cleveland, Cambridgeshire and Hampshire. It will now be extended to cover the entire force in those counties, as is already the case in Warwickshire, the fourth pilot area.

The scheme, which has been running for six months, allows parents, carers and guardians to request that someone who has access to their child is checked for a record of sexual offences. Any potentially risky convictions that are found will then be disclosed to the person best placed to protect the child.

The extension is a step closer to the media-dubbed "Sarah's Law", named after eight-year-old Sarah Payne who was killed by a convicted sex offender in 2000.
