Serious Case Review: Failure to listen can silence abuse victims

Social workers and police in south Wales failed to deal with a case of child abuse over a number of years. Joe Lepper reports on the lessons learned.

Among the many disturbing details to arise from a serious case review (SCR) released this year into the sexual abuse of four children in south Wales, was that the young victims' pleas for help were effectively ignored for years.

The SCR by Caerphilly, Neath Port Talbot and Pembrokeshire safeguarding children boards details how the victims felt "their voices were not heard" by social workers.

It emerged that one of the children first told social workers about the abuse in 2000 but due to poor practice by social services and police it took eight years for their abuser to be charged in connection with this abuse.
