'Social class' blinded professionals to abuse of siblings

Three children who suffered years of abuse in the care of two doctors were failed because social workers, police and teachers failed to act on repeated claims they were being mistreated, a serious case review has found.

The three siblings suffered severe and recurring abuse including frequent episodes of physical abuse, emotional cruelty and neglect over a nine-year period before one child’s repeated allegations of mistreatment were finally acted upon.

Research scientist Dr Jill Newcombe-Buley, 45, punched, slapped and smothered the children over a period of several years.

She was jailed for four years in October after admitting child cruelty while her husband, Dr Nicholas Newcombe, who pleaded guilty to neglect for failing to report his wife, was handed a 12-month suspended sentence.

The executive summary of the SCR revealed professionals associated with the case struggled to maintain a child focus when faced with the couple’s "aggressive behaviour" and their "disguised compliance".
