Sector dismayed over NYA cuts

2 mins read Youth Work
Youth sector organisations have responded with shock to news that the National Youth Agency (NYA) is cutting its staff numbers to just 16.5, warning young people could suffer.

More than 26 employees from a team of 43 were told last week that the recession and a decline in support from the Local Government Association (LGA) had forced trustees to make the decision.

The announcement comes as youth charities warn that the sector is facing a challenging financial future and is looking to national bodies, such as the NYA, for support.

"I was surprised by the news," said Adam Nichols, chief executive of Changemakers. "The sector needs to champion organisations such as the NYA. Now organisations it supported will be left to deliver services without assistance."

The NYA has confirmed it will continue all its funded programmes, including work with the LGA and the O2 Think Big scheme. But many in the sector have voiced concern that young people will suffer.
