Scouts issue volunteers alert

Youth Work
The economic situation is likely to damage attempts to recruit more volunteers to uniformed youth work, the Scout Association has warned.

The movement has seen a resurgence in recent years, but there iscurrently a waiting list of 30,000 young people wishing to join due to alack of adult volunteers.

Simon Carter, spokesman for the association said: "As more peoplestruggle to keep hold of jobs it will be a challenge for voluntaryorganisations that need voluntary leaders," he said, warning that peopleare increasingly working outside normal office hours.

The association is waiting to see if these fears will be realised in itscensus between January and March.

Carter added that the government's National Citizen Service programmecould be beneficial, by introducing thousands of young people tovolunteering.
