Scotland: Youth Work Capital Fund grows to meet demand

1 min read
The Scottish Executive has more than doubled the amount that it is handing out for youth facilities, in response to more than 400 bids from youth organisations.

In September the executive invited organisations to bid for a share of its 1m Youth Work Capital Fund, to help them revamp youth facilities or provide new equipment.

Since then, YouthLink Scotland, which administered the fund, has been swamped with applications, leading the executive to increase the fund to 2.5m. More than 200 organisations will benefit.

Blue Skate, a skating group in Peterhead, is among the groups to benefit.

It has been given 50,000 to complete a skatepark.

The money will enable the group to add ramps and a shelter to the concrete base of the park, which members now hope to complete next summer.

Youth worker Kevin Warrander, 20, was one of the original group of skaters who started fundraising seven years ago.

He said: "We've been waiting for this for many years and people are really excited about it."

Another group that has received money is Minginish Youth Club on the Isle of Skye, which has been granted 18,700 to install a youth shelter that will provide a place for young people to meet while a new hall is built.

Club co-ordinator Lesley Hellon said: "This new shelter will really address a need. The wind and the rain in Skye can be a bit of a problem."
