Scotland: Youth parliament to pilot free travel initiative

1 min read

Ross Watson, convenor of the parliament's transport, environment and rural affairs committee, is compiling plans for an experimental free travel scheme in one urban and one rural area of the country and is approaching local authorities or other organisations to subsidise it.

The scheme, which Watson hopes can be set up within the next few months, is designed to provide the Scottish Executive with a picture of how many young people use public transport in rural and urban areas and how much it would cost to provide free transport.

It also aims to show the impact free travel for under-18s would have on fee-paying customers and how they would perceive large groups of young people using public transport.
