The scheme, which the Scottish Executive hopes to launch early in 2007, will extend a free travel initiative that is to be introduced for disabled people and the over-60s next month. The Scottish Executive is still undecided as to what specific age range the young people's travel scheme should cover.
The move follows a campaign by the Scottish Youth Parliament for free travel for under-18s and full-time students. Ross Watson, convenor of the parliament's transport, environment and rural affairs committee, is preparing a paper for the Scottish Parliament's transport committee in the autumn.
"If we can get this going in Scotland, the next step will be to push for it in England," he said.
