Scotland starts to plot 10-year strategy

1 min read Early Years Health Social Care
Pregnant women whose children are thought likely to under achieve will be targeted under plans for Scotland's forthcoming 10-year early years strategy.

First Minister Alex Salmond opened a month-long consultation on the strategy last week, and said early intervention would play a major role.

Plans include the development of nurse-family partnerships similar to those piloted in England, where nurses work with pregnant teenagers and projects that help families at risk of homelessness or prone to antisocial behaviour. The strategy will also have a strong focus on parenting and services working together.

Salmond said: "It can be startling how easily disadvantaged children fall behind their peers. By giving support at the first opportunity we can offer better chances for those at risk, reinforce families, promote maternal health, tackle drug and alcohol misuse and strengthen communities."
