Scotland: More YouthBanks granted licences

1 min read

The Scottish applications are among 10 to have been approved by YouthBank UK's advisory forum - a panel of 14- to 25-year-olds from across the UK.

The decision brings the number of YouthBanks in the UK to 48. The new Scottish YouthBanks are in Fraserburgh, the Scottish Borders, Stirling, Ross and Cromarty, Nairn, Inverness, North Glasgow and Drumchapel. The organisation also granted licences to English YouthBanks in Stockton-on-Tees and Brighton.

Local YouthBanks typically involve between eight and 12 young people supported by a youth worker, who meet regularly to allocate small grants to youth-led projects.

One of Scotland's two representatives on the advisory forum, seventeen-year-old Drew Bruce, said: "It's really great that YouthBanks have expanded so fast in Scotland. Highland Council and the regional youth parliament have been very active in promoting them." YouthBank UK was formed by a consortium of youth organisations in 1999.
