Scotland: Executive irons out antisocial bill rows

The discussions follow threats of a rebellion by backbench MSPs opposed to measures in the bill that would allow police to disperse groups of two or more young people (YPN, 21-27 April, p7).

Donald Gorrie, the MSP representing the Liberal Democrats in the talks, said he was hopeful a compromise could be reached: "It needs to be acceptable to the Labour and Liberal Democrat groups and I'm confident we can produce this."

He said he was also pushing for the bill to include measures requiring local authorities to use youth work to address the causes of antisocial behaviour.

Plans to tag young people who commit antisocial behaviour were scrapped last week.
