Schools: Children lead play in Manchester

Nine- to 11-year-olds are helping younger children enjoy school playtimes through a scheme run by schools and council officers in Trafford, Manchester.

The Playground Leader scheme aims to help younger pupils who feel leftout of playtime by getting children from Years 5 and 6 to provide funactivities for them. It also aims to boost the leadership,organisational and teamwork skills of the older children.

"This scheme has had great results for both the younger pupils who areable to join in with the activities and also for the playground leadersthemselves," said Conservative councillor Ian Mullins, Trafford'sexecutive member for children's and young people's services. "There hasbeen a great impact on the development of some of the quieter andintroverted pupils. They have been able to express themselves throughleadership."
