Going for Gold?: Improving physical education in schools

Rachel Maguire, a member of Llanelli Gymnastics Club, shows off the gymnastic skills she and other children learnt through the Physical Education and School Sport scheme run by the Sports Council for Wales.

The scheme aims to improve physical education in schools across Walesand, since its launch in 2002, the Welsh Assembly Government has spentmore than 7m on the initiative. Philip Carling, chair of theSports Council for Wales, said: "Positive experiences of school sportencourage teamwork and help develop the social skills children can takewith them into adulthood." The scheme is now working with WelshGymnastics to develop resources that provide teachers with activities'skills and games to introduce children to gymnastics in a positiveenvironment.
