School rebuilding

1 min read Education
Governments across the UK are currently undertaking major school rebuilding and refurbishment programmes. Katie Daubney examines how these projects vary in terms of approach, funding and timescales for each country.

The government has said all secondary schools will be refurbished by 2020. The £2.2bn Building Schools for the Future programme was launched in 2005 to ensure pupils learn in modern facilities. The money is being rolled out in 15 separate waves, each subject to the latest Comprehensive Spending Review.

There is also the £1.9bn Primary Capital Programme, which will be used to support rebuilding or improvements in the country's primary schools. The project aims to improve at least half of the nation's primary schools by 2011. The work should also help primary schools to involve wider services for children and families during the next 14 years.
