ENGLAND
Under the £45bn Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, the government aims to "renew or rebuild" every secondary school in England during the next 10 to 15 years. Launched in 2003, the programme has targeted schools most in need first. According to the government, a dozen BSF schools will be open by the end of 2007/08, 50 more in 2008/09, 115 in 2009/10, 165 in 2010/11 and then 200 a year thereafter. The £7bn Primary Capital Programme meanwhile aims to "rebuild, revamp and remodel" 8,000 of England's 18,000 primary schools. The 900 primary schools in the worst condition will shut down or be replaced by new schools.
