The Sutton Trust report shows that only three per cent of pupils at thetop 200 state schools are eligible for free school meals compared to anational secondary school average of 14.3 per cent. The findings alsosuggest that the top schools do not reflect the social make up of theirarea.
A spokeswoman for the independent think-tank Social Market Foundationsaid the fairest and most transparent way of allocating places atoversubscribed schools was to use a lottery system.
"Parents can understand the system and it's the only way to get a randommix of pupils," she said.
