Admissions: Parents divided over lotteries

Adults are divided on whether places at over-subscribed schools should be allocated by a lottery or proximity to the school.

A poll commissioned by the Sutton Trust questioned nearly 2,000 adultsabout how school places should be allocated. Of these, 32 per centbacked using a lottery while 35 per cent said priority should go tochildren living close to the school.

The trust's chairman Peter Lampl said schools were right to use ballots:"This research suggests ballots have a role in deciding which pupilssecure places at oversubscribed schools."
