Hannah More Primary School in inner-city Bristol has been working with nearby rural schools to help make newly- arrived foreign families feel part of the community.
Activities included a maypole dancing project and a "reading buddies" scheme with local businesses that help the wider community understand some of the issues the children are facing.
Many of the children attending Hannah More are from families living in temporary accommodation. More than half speak English as an additional language, and a quarter of pupils have special educational needs.
The school scooped second place in educational charity ContinYou's Schools ETC Awards 2007 for its work in extended and community-focused services.
