Interview: Cornelia Cincilei, director, Step By Step Moldova - Extending into Europe

Last week learning and development charity ContinYou played host to visitors from Eastern Europe, who were here to put together a quality framework and self-evaluation tool for extended and community schools in their own countries.

The visitors, from Hungary, the Ukraine, Siberia, the Czech Republic andMoldova, all represented non-governmental organisations (NGOs) funded tosupport and encourage community schools with money from the CharlesStewart Mott Foundation, the charity formed by the General Motorsco-founder.

Cornelia Cincilei is the director of Step By Step Moldova, an NGO in theformer Soviet Union state, which became independent following thecollapse of the USSR in 1991.

Cincilei says: "When the Soviet Union collapsed many institutionsclosed. Kindergartens, community centres and even hairdressing services.Most services needed by communities closed down. Several schoolsidentified a need and introduced vocational courses for students andpeople in the community. People who volunteer to offer these courses arealso given the opportunity to provide services in schools. It's acollaboration of learning and service development."
