Rural communities: Sawtry council wins prize for inclusion

The Community Empowerment Award, given to the council by the Commission for Rural Communities in partnership with the National Association of Local Councils, recognised Sawtry's willingness to listen and involve young people in youth projects.

Ken Clearly, chairman of the National Association of Local Councils, said: "Sawtry made sure it included young people in the decision-making process."

Jackie Stanbridge, parish clerk at Sawtry council, said: "We have formed a youth committee, which has a young person representative, who informs us of the needs of young people in the community." She added that parish councils are becoming better at fundraising for youth projects: "In Sawtry we are becoming more aware of grants that are available."
