The challenge
The Education and Inspections Act requires all local authorities to publicise the activities available to young people in their local area.
One means of doing this is through an online database. But databases duplicate material already on the web and keeping them updated would be a "nightmare", says John Batt, project manager for participation at Somerset County Council's children and young people's directorate.
The solution
Batt's discussions with young people and colleagues confirmed that the solution lay in a portal directing young people to existing web sites.
He tapped into the council's 40,000 government grant for positive activities promotion to enlist the services of a company called Open Objects Software to develop it. The company provides a package that automatically "harvests" information from approved web site providers.
