Resources: Talking point - Will new school discipline laws work?

1 min read

The Government said the law was introduced to put an end to the "You can't tell me what to do" culture. Talk about this culture. Are teachers really powerless? Or do they sometimes exaggerate the problem?

The Government also says that schools now have a legal power to act "swiftly and decisively" against young people who are "consistently rude, disruptive and disrespectful". Will it work? Do young people think there should be a law to stop teachers being rude and disrespectful?

The discipline powers do not operate only in school. A weekend detention could be given for "unacceptable behaviour" on a bus on the way to or from school. Is this fair? Does it give teachers unreasonable rights of detention over young people?
