For most people in the UK, gambling is a fun leisure activity that brings no particular problems. Millions of people bet each week on the lottery, scratch cards, horserace betting, bingo and fruit machines. Talk about why they do it. Discuss the adrenaline rush and excitement that some people get from risking their own money in the hope of getting lucky.

It is said that Wayne Rooney, 20, began gambling by placing bets of hundreds of pounds, which escalated into thousands of pounds. He is said to be in legal dispute with a private bookmaker over 700,000 worth of bets.

Discuss what might cause someone to bet more than they want to. Some press reports have said that Rooney thinks he should have been protected from running up such big debts. Do young people agree? Is someone aged 20 mature enough to be able to set themselves limits and stick to them?
